What to do in May
- Plant out cannas and dahlias after all danger of frost has passed
- Hang pheromone traps in Apple and pear trees to reduce coddling moth caterpillars entering and damaging fruit
- When purchasing plants remember that single flowers are better food sources for insects that double blooms
- Feed lawns with a high nitrogen spring/summer fertiliser
- If your clumps of daffodils did not flower well this spring, bulbs could be too congested. Once the foliage begins to yellow dig up clumps and divide into smaller clumps and replant at a depth of three times the bulbs height
- Feed strawberries with tomato fertiliser every week or two
- Earth up potatoes by about 4 inches when shoots are 9 inches tall
- To maintain shape shape cut back the flowering stems of forsythia and ribes (ornamental current current) two shoots lower down
- Do not plant out summer bedding until the end of the month. Prepare window boxes and hanging baskets but again do not put outside until the end of May
- Clip evergreen hedges if required but check for nesting birds first.
